Dr. Walker honored with buffalo blanket

At the recent Association of American Indian Physicians meeting held in Oregon, Dale Walker, MD, Professor, Department of Psychiatry, and Director of the Center for American Indian Health, was presented with a White Buffalo Blanket.

The blanket ceremony was an acknowledgment of his tireless efforts at helping the Native Communities, mentoring new Native American Physicians from around the country, and his work with the One Sky Center.

The blanket, which is representative of the “healer or medicine man,” can only be presented by another Native American male (one of status). The presentation of the blanket was initiated at the event’s Powwow by Cornel Pewewardy, PhD, Associate Professor of Native American Studies, Portland State University.

Dr. Walker has been named Native American Physician of the year three times.
