July 22: ‘Stop the Bleed’ training to teach citizens life-saving steps for helping people in crisis

DETAILS:  

A team of OHSU trauma surgeons, including Martin A. Schreiber, M.D., professor and chief of Trauma, Critical Care and Acute Care Surgery at OHSU, has teamed up with the national "Stop the Bleed" campaign to provide a series of community trainings over the next several months. The first training in the series is this Saturday, July 22 (registration is full).                       

The trainings are designed to teach private citizens how to respond to victims of a traumatic event. Schreiber and colleagues will provide hands-on training in tourniquet application, applying direct pressure and packing an injury using hemostatic gauze.

OHSU is home to one of only two Level 1 Trauma centers

in Oregon. The OHSU trauma surgeons providing training are highly specialized and able to handle the most complex cases. Participants will be taught the same life-saving bleeding control techniques used by the military personnel in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Participants will receive a certificate of completion and should be able to lift at least 35 lbs. in order to use the equipment at the training. Personal bleeding kits can be purchased at controlbleedingkits.com and range from $69-$99.
