2017 Doernbecher Freestyle Collection to be unveiled, auctioned in support of OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital

WHAT:         

Preview the 2017 Doernbecher Freestyle collection before it’s unveiled for public auction. The collection features one-of-a-kind footwear and apparel collections designed by six OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital patients who were paired with a dedicated Nike design team.

Attending media will be able to:

• Take photos and video of the six patient-designers and their families as they reveal their designs for the first time.
• Conduct interviews with patient-designers who can share details of the inspiration behind each design and how the Doernbecher Freestyle experience has impacted their lives.

• Hear Dana Braner, M.D., F.A.A.P., F.C.C.M., describe how funds raised through the Doernbecher Freestyle program support patient care. Braner is Credit Unions for Kids chair and professor of pediatrics (critical care), OHSU School of Medicine; and physical-in-chief, OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital.
• Connect with the founder of the Doernbecher Freestyle program Michael Doherty, NIKE, Inc. Senior Creative Director of Global Brand Presentations and board member of the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital Foundation.

DETAILS:        

Doernbecher Freestyle represents a partnership between Nike and OHSU Doernbecher to provide young patients facing serious medical conditions the opportunity to design limited-edition footwear and apparel to support the children’s hospital. Since its inception in 2004, the program has raised $17 million to expand pioneering research, support clinical care, purchase state-of-the-art equipment, recruit new experts and help cover the cost of care for families most in need.

Earlier this year, as an extension of the Doernbecher Freestyle program, three childhood cancer survivors designed a new Nike Vapor Untouchable uniform and cleat performance system, sideline and fan gear for the Oregon Ducks football team. The uniforms debuted on the field during Childhood Cancer Awareness Month. All proceeds from the sales of the UO gear benefit a pediatric cancer fund at OHSU Doernbecher.
